'What’s Going On Now?' is a national project on music education & youth music-making in Scotland across the formal and informal sectors and taking account of all forms of provision and all musical styles.

Before you decide to fill out the survey, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve.

There is no doubt that the landscape of music education & youth music-making in Scotland has faced new challenges in the last 15 years since the original publication of What's Going On? (2003).

Nonetheless, thanks to the patient work of leaders across the formal and informal sectors, the spotlight on youth music-making has been sustained through initiatives such as the Instrumental Music Group and, latterly, the Music Education Partnership Group.

However, it is also clear that wider social, cultural and economic changes over the past 15 years have left their mark on young people's music-making. It's clear, therefore, that the time is right to take another look at music education & youth music in Scotland.

What will happen during the project?

This survey is for those who are directly involved with music education & youth music-making in Scotland - young people, those who tutor or teach them, and those who run music activities for young people.

If you decide to take part, you will be asked a series of questions. Participation is voluntary. This will take between 5 – 15 minutes depending on your role and can be done individually at a time of your choosing.

By answering 1 or more questions, you are giving your consent for us to use your responses in the data report. You do not have to answer any questions that you do not want to, and are free to withdraw at any time from the research without giving a reason by emailing me at the address below.

There may be no direct benefit for yourself or anyone else involved in taking part in this survey.
